But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. Being in Canon City during the 10th through the 14th of September, four of us stopped at Ortega's for lunch as I have done before. The first thing I have to say is the place is kept very clean. I am always impressed with this. This not only speaks of the employee's but of the management as well. It also tells me a great deal of what the kitchen must be like. Kudos to the owner's, Randy and Earl for this obvious asset. The food was delicious as always. Although the restaurant was very busy, service was great. Employee's were very polite and courteous. We will be returning to Ortega's on our next trip into Canon City.

The pork burrito was very tasty, apparently their speciality is their pork and avocado burrito. Friendly, fast swrvice. Nice outdoor patio space and lots of parking.

On a recent trip to Canon City with my husband we stop by Ortega's because I really wanted Mexican. Another selling point? They have a nice patio area with misters for when it gets hot and we wanted to sit outside. We were there on a Saturday night and it was super quite - in fact we were the only table and they closed up shop a little early because of lack of business that night so you might want to call ahead and make sure they are open if you are stopping by later in the evening. However, our server was still very kind and didn't rush us so she could get out of there. I ordered fajitas to see how they compare to my favorite Canon City spot - El Caporal and there was some good and bad pieces. The good was the flavor of the meat, the fact that they used more peppers than onions and that I got all three colors of peppers, and that they gave me pinto beans. However, I prefer El Caporal just for the fact that pork is a meat option and they let me choose corn or flour tortillas. The tortillas here for flour and they were kind of crispy which isn't conducive to folding. Another good about this spot is the salsa. It has a nice kick and big chucks of tomato. A bad is that only your first basket of chips and salsa are free. Another odd thing about Ortega's is that they are now a Mexican-Italian-American restaurant. They might be interested in drawing in more folks with a menu that expands this way, but I usually find that when a place tries to focus too broadly usually the quality of all dishes fall. I will say that the other 3 people I dined with all thoroughly enjoyed their meal and Sir Nicholas said the green chile here might be his favorite in all of Colorado so it's worth a try. Just order one of those and not my dish.

The staff is very nice, but the food was mediocre at best. Very bland and had an odd aftertaste. And beware, they bring you complementary salsa and chips but then charge you if you ask for more salsa and don't tell you until you see it on the bill. I have never before been charged extra for salsa at a Mexican restaurant. They also charged $1.50 for a tiny dollop of sour cream. There are definitely much better other Mexican options in town.

Food was ok, the breakfast burritos had very little meat and eggs and an overdose of potatoes.

Let me begin with this Texan not having high expectations for any Mexican food other than what she can find in her own kitchen or backyard! But the chicken enchilada w/green chili sauce was STELLAR! 5 stars!! On the opposite end the rice tastes fresh from a box. And if you order refried beans you get dry beans that have been on the stove too long. If you order barracho beans you get the same nasty beans. What can I say?
